After running 2 marathons and swimming 5km, and a few times 2.5km Swimathon challenges I often think about doing a triathlon. It is one of my recent fitness goals. Thanks to Alice from Project Wonderlust I have been given a chance to fulfil this dream, and I am very excited about it. I just need to decide which challenge and when, and that is not going to be easy.
Human Race, who are celebrating 25 years of organising triathlons, have just released their 2015 triathlon calendar, with lot of events for beginners and ‘mates waves’ being a big feature of the year’s calendar.
With over 15 triathlon events to choose from within a train ride of London, there is something suitable for everyone, regardless of experience or ability. The flat course and pristine waters of Dorney Lake make this the perfect venue for beginners to race on safe, flat closed roads. For anyone new to the sport who doesn’t want the expense of costly kit, there will be wetsuit hire available from BlueSeventy and bike hire available on the day. There are also lots of opportunities to take part with your mates as well as in traditional age group structures.
The Shock Absorber Women Only Challenge Alice is taking part in is in less than a month away, and I have not been cycling for ages. I am a pretty confident runner and swimmer, but road cycling has somehow not been one of my biggest pleasures.
I love off road cycling, but I am terrified of cycling on the road. My husband is the opposite and hope he could get me into this. We have spoken about it, and he said I really need to stop being worried about getting hit by a car… Anyway, I am not giving up and will try to get back into cycling first and once I feel I am back on track with cycling I am hoping to give road cycling a go too.
Any tips on how to stop my worries? I know I am usually the one giving tips and tricks, but really would love to hear anything that could help me to be confident on the road as much as in water.
Human Race have been very kind to Fitness 4 Mamas readers too, and are also offering £5.00 off your entry to any of the Human Race triathlon events left for 2015! Just add the discount code from the image above!

Definitely go for it! Good luck! I don’t have any tips for the cycling though, as I feel the same as you. My husband is a cyclist and does mainly road cycling and road time trials. with a little bit of mountain biking. I always get worried when he’s out on the road. It drives me mad when he’s later than he says he going to be! I’m sorry, that’s probably not helped at all has it! 🙂 x
I’m in awe of triathletes. Not sure I’ll ever have the dedication or stamina for something like that!
I used to cycle on the road all the time as a kid, though I’ve not cycled for years. Are there quieter roads, or even a park with a lot of service roads near you? That could be a better place to start. Or cycle with your husband, but go in front so you aren’t so aware of the cars behind you?
Fantastic, enjoy your new challenge! Good luck!
Good luck with your new challenge! I have huge admiration for anyone attempting triathlon as I’m not a very confident swimmer. I’m a ‘keep my head out of the water swimming breast stroke’ kind of girl! Hope you find your confidence on the road on the bike too.
Go for it! I’ve just completed my very first super sprint tri in Henley. I loved it. Cycling is my least favourite part usually – but on the day I found it the easier bit! Dorney is only up the road from me, I’ll have to take a look. Keep us posted! #FitnessTuesdays
Oh wow – excellent news! Good luck. I couldn’t get my hair in a swim cap … that’s my excuse anyway xx #FitnessTuesday
Good luck with the cycling – and the triathlon training. My tip is to make eye contact with the drivers as much as you can, it’s just a small tip but I feel so much better for looking people in the eye!! 🙂 #fitnesstuesday
Fantastic! So great to have a new challenge. I know how you feel about the bike. I think getting your confidence and practising on some cycle paths and quieter roads first is a good idea. Trying to relax helps as if you’re nervous and tense on the bike you’re more likely to wobble. Make yourself very visible and don’t cycle too close to the side of the road – there’s too many pot holes and drains to unsteady you. I’ve often wondered why they don’t make L plates for cyclists! Very best of luck, you can do it x
