You might expect me talking about keeping fit during wet and cold months, but right this moment I am trying to cope with super hot summer temperatures in The Czech Republic. I am known for being a sunshine and heat lover, but after 2 weeks of temperatures reaching 38 C in shade even I start thinking about a bit lower temperatures!
Is heat worse than cold? I don’t know, for some people it is and for some it isn’t. As you might be aware I have started training for the Venice Marathon, and the heat cannot stop me. I usually never run in early morning hours, but that’s exactly the only time when I can run now otherwise it’s just too hot and not good for my health either.
The terrain around my parents’ weeknd house near the Skalka reservoir is quite hilly and not as easy to avoid the hills. I take it as a challenge and hope this will mean once I get back to running along the local canal in Rickmansworth, it will be very easy for me. Today I ran 8km, and cannot say it was an easy run at all.
Running is one of my most favourite sports as I love being outside. I hate running indoors and in winter times or on rainy days I swap my running for swimming. Last 3 years I had been asked to be the official blogger for swimathon, and I loved it. Having some kind of an aim is always good for me.
Skiing is another sport I love and have been doing for years. I even own a ski instructor pass and used to teach children when I was a secondary Grammar school teacher in Cheb years ago. These days my skills help when teaching my older one, and I was the one who taught and introduced daddy to skiing too.
Years back I had a dream to run a marathon, and I did, twice and planning another 2 now. Another of my dream is to take part in a triathlon, and you might remember me mentioning this before. I love cycling, off road cycling and my spinning classes which are fab for autumn and winter not for summer months!!! I need to get more into cycling and hopefully another of my fitness dreams will come true!
How about you? Do you stick to one sport and do it all year round, or are you more like me and have different sports for different seasons?
I think for me it’s important to have a variety of sports, as that way you do not get bored of these and keep up your fitness routines. Legal & General have recently shared a post on ways to stay active whatever the weather, why don’t you check it out for some more tips?
Disclaimer: I have been offered a Sony MP3 player in return for featuring this post
My sport of choice doesn’t vary according to the weather, I tend to do everything all year – running, weights, yoga.
Running in the heat is not pleasant though, I feel for you. At least during the training you can do your runs whenever you want, you can’t do that during race day. When’s the marathon?
I have to say I don’t do too well in hot weather, we’ve just returned from Florida and although it was amazing the heat did get to me. I’m struggling to get back to the running at the moment, I’m still resting from the “holiday” in which we walked more than 369 miles! To say I’m worn out is an understatement, and we’ve been back for a few weeks now!
It’s good to do other stuff and not just concentrate on one work out, I try to switch between yoga and running. At least I do when I’m motivated. ๐
I’ve suffered with shin splints in the past which limits me when it comes to running.
I’m a funny one though and love a good run in the rain!!
I have a friend who lives in Seattle who does Ironman Triathlons. She runs through the cold and rain and bikes in the heat. As an aging non-athlete, I am in awe of her and of you for your goals and accomplishments.
That is so sweet of you, and I’m in awe of your friends’ achievements!
Brilliant, I’d love to run, but I’m far too self conscious plus I dont really have the time!! I do try to do DVD workouts at home most days though. Maybe one day I’ll find the confidence to go out running… ๐ #brilliantblogposts
That’s a shame, but it’s good that you do your workouts with DVDs. We all love different things, don’t we?
Variety really helps you keep motivated and work different sets of muscles but I have to admit I tend to run much more than anything else. I love winter running and even running in the rain. I’ve struggled with the heat on holiday but have given up a few precious lie-ins to get some early morning runs in. Best of luck with your marathon training, looking forward to reading about your journey xx
Thanks lovely. I wish I was like you and enjoyed running in rain.
You are a real inspiration Mirka, so proud of you, I need to build up the confidence for marathons just not sure they’re for me. I actually love running on my treadmills indoors, I have it in the garage and we are going to get a TV in there, I feel a little self conscious running near us although we live in the countryside, the village is small though, I need to get over that and get running outside more x
I love running outside lovely, give it a go. Love the area where you live!
