Just a Drop of Water #MumsArmy

February 2, 2016 By fitness4mamas 4 Comments

Community water pump in Uganda
Today I would like to share a very important campaign run by Mums Army who help raise funds for Just A Drop international water aid charity with a very simple plan, to give people clean water.

Before I reveal some shocking facts, please stop for a minute and think. What does water mean to you?

To me it’s something I do not think about that much, but use all the time.

I cannot imagine not having a drink of water while sweating at my spinning classes. I cannot imagine not having clean water for my children. Can you imagine if they had to drink water from the Thames?

International water aid charity, Just a Drop, strives to hit home what it would be like for western families if their children had to walk miles to collect water, only to become sick because it was unsafe to drink.

Mum of two, Fiona Jeffery, founded Just a Drop when her kids were small after being horrified at the plight of some of the poorest communities in the world where there was no clean water.

Women and children can spend anything from one to twelve hours a day collecting water, meaning they are unable to go to school or get an education.

They are also at severe risk of disease, with a child dying every 20 seconds from drinking dirty water. Just a Drop helps provide clean, safe water in over 30 countries worldwide.

Just a Drop’s Mums Army campaign calls on mums across the UK to unite and form brigades within their local community to raise funds, through simple activities like coffee mornings, for fellow mothers in developing countries.

At the forefront of these are what they call ‘Troop Leaders’, mothers who are ‘leaders’ and can motivate their friends and recruit other mums to get involved with this important cause, with just £1 providing a child with clean water for up to 10 years.

It is utterly heartbreaking, knowing how something so essential to life is not readily available to so many. Thanks for sharing the campaign, I’d never heard of the charity before.

You’re so right we take water for granted and I’m sure there’s more each of us can do to be more efficient with it. A great cause – thanks for hosting #fitnesstuesdays
